Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India - An estimated 8500 people gathered in the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple, and the surrounding courtyard this morning. The weather was warm as His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove to the temple steps. He smiled and waved to well-wishers who greeted him as he passed. Once he was seated on the throne, His Holiness performed preliminary procedures.

Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India - This morning His Holiness the Dalai Lama came to the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple, to join in the recitation of ‘mani’ mantras—Om mani padmé hung. This is an event that regularly takes place during the first days of Saga Dawa, the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar, that commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Buddha Shakyamuni.

Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India - This morning His Holiness the Dalai Lama walked from his gate to take his seat in the veranda beneath the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple. 353 performers, members of opera groups from several Tibetan settlements, who had taken part in the recent Sho-tön Opera Festival, were gathered in the temple courtyard to meet him. A lead singer of each group came to the microphone.
